2. Why Search Engines Dislike Paid Links
Search engines WANT to organically determine a piece of useful content.
Google’s ideal world is a world without artificial links. Where websites link to one another because their content is good.

Matt Diggity explains that buying backlinks from sites with “write for us” in their menus could trigger a manual review.
It is believed that an algorithm detects the frequency of such terms within your inbound profile. If they cross a certain volume or percentage – Google would penalize you. Dropping your rankings drastically.
Matt had handled 1,000+ manual action cases and found that this is a common issue many SEOs face.
This is ultimately fine if you DO NOT have such terms in the majority of your link profile. Too much of such will definitely cause some issues.
Low volume sites
Backlinks with suspiciously low volume can also raise red flags. Which in Google’s eyes, are the presence of PBNs.
Similarly, a large number of such links could warrant a Google penalty.
Naturally, trustworthy links tend to rank highly for competitive search terms. This would result in higher traffic, whereas low quality links would receive poor volume.
One might also claim that a link would only need a high DR to rank. Rank well you may… but the algorithm may start punishing you if you do not have trustworthy links to compensate!

Stuff like sponsored posts may seem like high quality backlinks – however, Google does actively penalize them! It is good practice to “No follow” a sponsored content, or label it as “rel:sponsored”.
More so, the traditional “white hat” tactics many SEOs have come to love, may appear more sinister than they seem. Links from magazines may cause issues if the word “advertise” is found in the footer.
The rule of thumb is this – the easier it is to acquire your link, the less trustworthy it actually is.

But first, an SEO should determine how many links he/she needs. A simple way to do this is to search your target keyword on Ahrefs keyword explorer.
Afterwards, compare the top rankers to your site. How many links do you need to catch up to their numbers?
Also, what are the characteristics of those links? Are they .edu, .gov links? Or are they low DR spam sites?
In most cases, replicating or going beyond the “link gap” would certainly improve rankings. Though there is no guarantee that you could rank above their competitors – due to the myriad of factors Google accounts for.
Of course, you should not select overly competitive keywords. It might require a huge investment to catch up to the “Link gap”.
Hence SEOs will have to pick the right keywords based on their allocated budget.
There are also a ton of additional services that you may not need. Ask your link builder to streamline their processes for you – so that you can save unnecessary expenditure.
DIY Link building
Many pay top dollar for link building services that use guest posts, PR, HARO, and press releases to acquire links.
These days, site owners and bloggers are aware of their value to SEOs. Hence, they typically charge a publishing fee as well. Which of course, violates Google’s TOS vehemently.
However, it remains undetectable unless their site makes it obvious. This is a common mistake SEOs make… when they patronize websites with “write for us” and “submission” links in their menus.
To reiterate (in case you scrolled past it), Google has been known to penalize websites that have a ton of inbound links that display “write for us” in their menus.
Such faux pas should be avoided.
However, outreach is not that complicated. Any SEO could train themselves to perform guest posting, write for HARO – or even create PR stunts.
The problematic part is the training, hiring, and managing of other SEOs/VAs. Especially when link gaps are high, your tactics need to evolve when approaching higher DR sites.
And if your process were to change in such a system, it will only wreak havoc. Otherwise, you might need to hire more people to fulfill the demand.
Thus you can see that this is a rather tiresome process. Hence, many opt to buy backlinks instead.
Buy quality backlinks with intense scrutiny
As mentioned, buying a backlink is more than that. You are hiring an entire team to acquire you a backlink.
That does not mean that you should sit back and pop a cold one. Many would argue that tracking your links will become your number one priority.
Aside from ensuring that your links are always live, ensuring that your acquired links are quality is equally important.
Below are a few things you should scrutinize when buying links.
- Check to make sure that your acquired link is not a PBN in disguise. This is distinguishable if the backlink has little to no traffic, generic web designs (and they can still look stunning!), and little internal links.
- To re-emphasize again, make sure that your backlink does not have “write for us” or “submit your story” etc. within their menus. Too many of such links will certainly lead to a manual action.
- Most importantly, ensure that the backlink is relevant and non-adult. Niche edits on non-relevant sites have been shown to result in manual reviews.
Alternate “Dark” methods
We generally do not condone black hat SEO. Rankings might plummet the moment Google inspects your site closely.
Competitors might even report you!
However, if masked correctly, certain black hat strategies may be worthwhile. Especially so with PBNs.
PBNs provide the necessary ‘power’ to push rankings higher, giving you high quality backlinks at a bargain.
PBNs in bulk may work for other search engines that are less sophisticated. However, we would not recommend overusing them either.
The control you have is also unparalleled. Guest posters may internal link your article to other pages on their site, limiting the amount of link juice you receive. PBNs however, give you unfettered access to your content.
What should I try?
This is niche-dependent. Certain industries may have a ton of link opportunities, like travel or cosmetics. But industries like manufacturing are difficult to build links in.
Additionally, legal and medical SEO is an extremely different environment to rank for. Hence, SEOs will need to study which of the three link building strategies fits best.
